Inspirational Conversation: Reorienting Mathematics Education Toward a More Meaningful Curriculum

The academic discussion forum entitled “NGOPI: Ngobrol Penuh Inspirasi” (“Inspirational Conversation”) was successfully organized by the Mathematics Education Study Program under the theme Reorienting Mathematics Education, Curriculum Integration, Pedagogy, and Strengthening Future Educators. The event featured Iwan Pranoto, Professor of Mathematics at Institut Teknologi Bandung, who is widely recognized for his contributions to the discourse on educational development in Indonesia.

The event took place in the meeting room on the second floor of the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training and was attended by lecturers from the undergraduate and graduate Mathematics Education Study Programs, as well as graduate students of Mathematics Education at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. This discussion was also part of the ongoing comprehensive curriculum review agenda for the undergraduate and graduate Mathematics Education programs at FITK UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta.

In his presentation, Prof. Iwan emphasized the importance of viewing elementary mathematics from a broader and more profound perspective. He highlighted that a strong conceptual understanding of foundational mathematical ideas can open wider intellectual horizons. He also stressed that pedagogy cannot be separated from content; rather, it should be shaped by the nature and structure of mathematics itself.

Furthermore, he underlined that prospective mathematics teachers must possess strong content mastery so that they can focus more effectively on designing meaningful learning strategies. He also stated that in the educational process, graduation should not be regarded as the ultimate goal, but rather as part of a lifelong journey of intellectual and character development. The follow-up to this discussion is expected to provide an important foundation for redesigning the Mathematics Education curriculum at both undergraduate and graduate levels, ensuring a more structured direction and a stronger educational role model.
