Mathematics Education Study Program Holds Curriculum Redesign Workshop to Strengthen Outcome-Based Education
The Mathematics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta organized a Curriculum Redesign Workshop on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. The workshop featured Dr. Ali Mahmudi, M.Pd. from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta as the keynote speaker. The event was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Prof. Dr. Sri Sumarni, M.Pd., the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Institutional Development, Prof. Dr. Abdul Munip, M.Ag., as well as the head of the study program and faculty members.
In his presentation, Dr. Ali Mahmudi emphasized that curriculum development should be aligned with the principles of Outcome-Based Education (OBE), which serves as the foundation for international accreditation systems. He highlighted that curriculum design should go beyond fulfilling administrative requirements and instead ensure that each Program Learning Outcome (PLO) is meaningful, measurable, and effectively achieved through well-designed learning activities and assessment strategies. Dr. Mahmudi also stressed the importance of adopting a backward curriculum design approach. Rather than beginning with course content, curriculum developers should first define the graduate profile and the expected learning outcomes. Course structures, teaching methods, and assessment strategies should then be systematically designed to support the achievement of those outcomes.
Addressing future educational challenges, he noted that higher education must prepare students for a rapidly changing world. Teaching technical skills alone (how to do something) is no longer sufficient. Instead, education should cultivate a deeper understanding of why knowledge matters, enabling graduates to think critically, solve problems creatively, and adapt to emerging challenges. Accordingly, the curriculum should foster essential twenty-first-century competencies, including critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, information literacy, and digital literacy.
Through this workshop, the Mathematics Education Study Program reaffirmed its commitment to continuously improving its curriculum to meet national higher education standards, respond to global educational developments, and produce graduates who are academically competent, innovative, and well-prepared for future challenges.
