Joint Seminar of Mathematics Education and Mathematics Tadris Discusses Inclusive and Deep Learning Approaches

The Mathematics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta together with the Mathematics Tadris Study Program of UIN KH Abdurrahman Wahid Pekalongan organized a Joint Seminar as one of the implementations of the academic collaboration between the two study programs. The event, held online on Tuesday, May 5, 2025, was attended by all students from both programs. The seminar served as a shared forum to broaden students’ perspectives on contemporary issues and approaches in mathematics education.

Representing the Mathematics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Sumbaji Putranto delivered a presentation entitled “Inclusive Mathematics Learning: Concepts, Opportunities, and Challenges.” In his presentation, he emphasized the importance of providing mathematics learning environments that accommodate the diverse characteristics and needs of students. Meanwhile, the speaker from the Mathematics Tadris Study Program of UIN KH Abdurrahman Wahid Pekalongan, Ahmad Dzulfikar, presented the topic “Deep Mathematics Learning (Orientation toward Mathematical Thinking)”, which highlighted the importance of strengthening mathematical thinking through deeper conceptual understanding.

The Head of the Mathematics Tadris Study Program at UIN KH Abdurrahman Wahid, Santika Lya Diah Pramesti, expressed her hope that this event would not become the only form of collaboration between the two institutions, but would instead be followed by various other academic initiatives in the future. In line with this, the Head of the Mathematics Education Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Burhanddin Latif, also welcomed the continuation of this collaboration and highlighted the significance of the two seminar topics. According to him, inclusive mathematics learning and deep mathematics learning are often perceived as opposing approaches, whereas in fact they can complement one another in developing more meaningful mathematics education.
